Our verdict on Gio
Gio is an open-source Go library for building graphical user interfaces across desktop, mobile and WebAssembly. It is aimed at Go developers who want to share application code across Linux, macOS, Windows, Android, iOS and tvOS, with FreeBSD and OpenBSD also documented as targets. Its immediate-mode model comes with APIs for widgets, layout, text and theming, alongside window management, input handling and GPU drawing. This is a focused framework choice for teams comfortable with Go and native-style GUI work, rather than a general-purpose cross-platform app suite.
The build workflow differs by target. Desktop programs can use the Go toolchain directly; the gogio build tool supports mobile and WebAssembly targets. It can generate Android APK and AAR artifacts, as well as iOS and tvOS apps and frameworks, which can be integrated into native projects. Rendering uses OpenGL ES and Direct3D 11. These capabilities make Gio relevant when a project needs both shared Go UI code and platform build outputs, though the separate target workflows are worth considering during planning.
Gio is free and open source, distributed under the Unlicense or MIT license, with documentation and community support channels. It does not include AI features, and its published feature set centers on GUI fundamentals rather than a wider collection of application services. Choose it if Go is central to the team’s stack and desktop or mobile interfaces are the goal. Developers seeking a framework built around another primary language, or a broader out-of-the-box app-development toolkit, should consider alternatives.
