Our verdict on Gfarm

Gfarm combines storage from multiple computers and clusters across wide areas into one shared file system. A single virtual directory hierarchy gives research and technical teams a common view of distributed data, while multi-site deployment supports storage nodes spread across regions. It is open source, self-hosted, and available on Linux, Windows, and macOS, making it suited to organizations that can operate their own storage infrastructure.

Its strongest capability is configurable replication. Administrators can set replica counts and choose placement locations, helping distribute files across sites. Gfarm also detects silent data corruption and avoids reading corrupted copies, an important safeguard for large research datasets. Capacity can be added or removed without stopping the system, which supports infrastructure changes while services remain online. These controls make Gfarm a fit for data-sharing environments where location, availability, and integrity matter together.

Integration options extend beyond the native client interface. Access is available through FUSE with gfarm2fs, an HTTP(S) gateway, and SMB through Samba, with connections to Nextcloud, Hadoop, MPICH, MVAPICH, GridFTP, and Zabbix. OAuth/OIDC authentication is supported. Setup requires configuring metadata servers, file-system nodes, and clients, so deployment calls for administrators familiar with distributed storage. Email, phone, and vendor deployment assistance are available. Gfarm suits research groups, supercomputing environments, and enterprises needing open-source multi-site storage; organizations seeking a fully managed service or deeper operational tooling may prefer another option.
