Our verdict on GeoDNS

GeoDNS is an open-source authoritative DNS server for operators who want to return different DNS responses based on the requesting client. It is aimed at technical teams comfortable with self-hosting and configuring zones in JSON files. The project supports Linux deployment and is available at no charge. Its routing can target clients by country, continent, region, or region group, and weighted records provide another way to distribute responses. That combination makes GeoDNS relevant to teams that need control over DNS answers rather than a hosted service with a broader managed feature set.

The routing and record support are central strengths. GeoDNS handles A, AAAA, Alias, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, SPF, and SRV records, and accepts DNS requests over UDP and TCP. Operators can log queries to JSON or Avro files, while Prometheus metrics are exposed over HTTP. Zone configuration files are automatically reloaded when changed, so edits to the JSON configuration can be reflected without relying on a managed control panel. The project describes itself as powering the NTP Pool system and similar services. For teams already operating infrastructure and monitoring, these capabilities offer a focused toolkit for directing DNS traffic and observing queries.

The tradeoff is that GeoDNS does not include health checks or failover routing. Geographic and weighted responses let operators shape answers, but they do not provide those automated availability controls. Deployment is self-hosted, and the listed support channel is community support, so teams should be prepared to manage the server and its configuration themselves. Choose GeoDNS if free, open-source geographic DNS control and Prometheus visibility fit your operating model. Teams that need built-in health checks, automatic failover, or a hosted DNS service should consider an alternative.
