Our verdict on Gemfury

Gemfury is a hosted artifact repository for storing, distributing, and deploying private or public software packages. It fits small teams that need private package hosting without running their own repository infrastructure. The service supports ten package formats and ecosystems, including RubyGems, npm, Python PyPI, PHP Composer, APT/DEB, YUM/RPM, Bower, NuGet, Maven, and Go Modules. It is available through the web and API, with packages installable through standard package-management tools.

Its plan structure covers both public and private publishing. The Free plan includes unlimited public packages, unlimited versions, and SSL protection. Personal 1C, 5C, 10C, 25C, and 50C plans provide unlimited private and public packages, with collaborator counts matching each plan name. Team 10P and Team 20P include unlimited collaborators, unlimited public packages, and 10 or 20 private packages respectively. A 14-day free trial is also available. This makes Gemfury particularly suitable for small teams whose private package needs fit within a defined collaborator or package allowance.

Publishing options are broad: users can upload through the dashboard, CLI, cURL, or Git-based builders. Upstream proxying can connect package workflows to existing registries, while organization accounts, collaborator permissions, authenticated repository URLs, and read-only deploy tokens support controlled access. Package and version archiving adds lifecycle management, and API access exposes account data. Gemfury is a good fit for teams publishing libraries and application dependencies across supported ecosystems. Teams that require container artifacts or deeper repository governance should choose a platform designed for those needs instead.
