Our verdict on Gaseous

Gaseous is an open-source, self-hosted game ROM manager and server for organizing, importing, and browsing ROM collections. It is aimed at people who want a web-accessible library with browser-based emulation rather than a conventional desktop storefront or launcher. ROMs can be uploaded through the web interface, imported from directories with background processing, or added from existing library paths. Managed and unmanaged custom libraries support different collection workflows.

Its ecosystem combines IGDB, Hasheous, and EmulatorJS. IGDB supplies metadata including cover art and screenshots, while ROM signature and hash matching can help associate files with titles. EmulatorJS supports browser-based emulation across numerous retro platforms. The product also supports save-state downloads and uploads, allowing state files to move with the library. These features make Gaseous more than a catalog: it connects collection organization, identification, metadata, and browser play in one self-hosted system.

Deployment flexibility is a strength, with Docker, source installation, Unraid, and an experimental Windows installer listed as options. The tradeoff is operational responsibility: hosting, importing libraries, and maintaining the deployment sit with the operator. Authentication features include password access, two-factor authentication, and OIDC, giving administrators several ways to control access to a private collection. Gaseous suits users who value open-source control, browser access, and detailed ROM organization. Those seeking a turnkey hosted service or a broader game-management system beyond ROM collections should consider a different type of product.
