Our verdict on FosterStack
FosterStack is a self-hosted remote build cache server for Gradle and Maven projects. It supports Gradle’s remote build cache HTTP protocol and Apache Maven Build Cache Extension remote HTTP mode, allowing teams to share build outputs across local development and CI environments. The core is open source under the MIT license, with Linux and macOS support. It is intended for teams that want to operate their own cache infrastructure rather than use a broader build platform or remote execution service.
Its technical scope is focused but practical. Size-capped LRU eviction helps control cache growth, while HTTP GET, PUT, and HEAD endpoints support the remote cache workflow. Optional HTTP Basic Authentication provides an access-control option, and Prometheus metrics, a health endpoint, and a read-only status page expose operational information such as cache hit rate and cache size. Grafana is listed as an integration. Static binaries and distroless container images suit deployments using Docker, Kubernetes, or systemd, while signed releases and SLSA provenance add release-verification signals.
The Free plan includes the full cache server, self-hosting, the MIT license, security patches, and release evidence. The published monthly plans list Team at $49 per month with multi-user access control, OIDC SSO, per-project usage analytics, and email support; Business at $199 per month adds high-availability replication, priority support, and a CVE-response target; Compliance is $499 per month billed annually and adds a FIPS 140-3 applicability statement, per-release attestation letters, security-questionnaire support, and named-version LTS. The vendor states that these paid tiers are not yet built or shipped. FosterStack fits operators seeking a focused, self-hosted Gradle and Maven cache; teams needing other build systems or remote execution should choose an alternative.
