Our verdict on Focra
Focra is a free, open-source desktop screen recorder for developers, educators, makers, and teams. It captures screens or windows, mixes microphone and system audio, and supports pause and resume recording. Installers are available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it suitable for users who want a locally installed tool across the major desktop platforms. Its focus is screen and window capture rather than a broader video-production or collaboration suite.
The standout feature set combines automatic zoom with local AI captioning. Focra generates zoom animations from cursor dwell points, while Whisper-based auto-captioning runs locally. Zoom keyframe editing gives users control over the generated effect, and text and arrow annotations can clarify demonstrations, lessons, and technical walkthroughs. Trimming, cropping, and background customization extend the editing workflow without changing the product's emphasis on recording desktop activity.
The published plan structure is simple: the Free plan provides the open-source desktop recorder, automatic zoom, annotations, background customization, and exports at no charge. Recordings can be exported in WebM or MP4, with resolutions up to 4K. Focra should suit buyers who value open-source software, local captioning, and a focused desktop workflow. Choose an alternative if webcam capture, integrations, or a wider recording ecosystem are central requirements.
