Our verdict on FOBG

FOBG is an open-source Python application for removing backgrounds from images and videos. It is aimed at technical users who can install Python dependencies and run software locally, with web access through an interactive Gradio interface and automation through a command-line interface. Image output is exported as transparent PNG files, while video processing works frame by frame and can preserve alpha channels. Batch processing and commercial use are supported, and the project is MIT-licensed.

The main strength is control over the removal process. FOBG supports several selectable AI models, including U2Net and ISNet variants, so users can choose between available processing approaches rather than relying on one fixed model. Alpha matting, foreground and background thresholds, and mask erosion controls provide additional ways to refine results. These options make the application a better fit for workflows where edge handling and mask adjustment matter, particularly when transparent output is needed for images or video frames.

FOBG’s self-hosted design is also its clearest trade-off.
