Our verdict on FMDB

FMDB is an open-source wrapper around SQLite for developers building native Apple-platform applications in Objective-C or Swift. It works with local SQLite files, temporary databases, and in-memory databases, and provides database connections, result sets, SQL execution, parameter binding, transactions, save points, and custom SQLite functions. Its fit is strongest for applications that need direct, local database access without adding a hosted database service or synchronization layer.

The library’s standout strength is the depth of its SQLite access model. FMDatabaseQueue provides thread-safe queued database access, while FMResultSet handles query results and the library supports both positional and named parameters. SQL updates, queries, and multi-statement execution are covered, with transactions and save points available for more controlled write operations. Optional SQLCipher encryption can be added through a Swift Package Manager trait. Integration is available through CocoaPods, Carthage, Swift Package Manager, and SQLCipher, giving Apple-platform teams several established package paths.

FMDB is free and open source, which makes it suited to projects that want a local SQLite layer without a paid plan structure. Its scope is deliberately narrow: it is a local database access library, not a hosted database or synchronization service. Choose FMDB when an application needs mature SQLite operations, offline local storage, and control over database behavior on Apple platforms. Choose a different category of product when shared cloud data, built-in synchronization, or a hosted database backend is central to the application.
