Our verdict on FMD

FMD is free, open-source software for locating and remotely controlling Android phones. It suits people who want recovery tools without a paid plan and who value choosing how commands reach a device and where the server runs. It is a phone-focused option rather than a locator for tracker tags or devices across multiple brands, so buyers seeking a wider tracking network should look elsewhere.

Location is its central strength: the Android app can report GPS/GNSS, Android fused location, cell-based lookup, or a last known location. Remote commands include ringing or changing ringer mode, locking, taking a photo, erasing device data, and toggling GPS or location services, subject to permissions. The breadth of actions makes FMD more than a location display, though the usefulness of each action depends on the phone being reachable and appropriately configured.

Commands can arrive by SMS, compatible Android notification replies, the app's in-app interface, or the FMD Server web interface. Signal, WhatsApp, Matrix, and UnifiedPush are among the listed integrations; BeaconDB and OpenCelliD are also listed. The server can be self-hosted or accessed through a public instance, giving users a choice about deployment rather than requiring one central service. Support is through community resources and documentation. Choose FMD if you use Android and are comfortable with its phone-only scope and configuration choices; choose another product if you need tracker-tag compatibility or broader device coverage.
