Our verdict on Flamenco

Flamenco is a free, open-source framework for dispatching and scheduling Blender render jobs across computers managed by a central Manager and Workers. It is designed for individuals and smaller teams that want to run a farm on their own infrastructure. A Blender add-on submits jobs from Output Properties, while a browser-based interface provides access to the Manager. The supported rendering software includes Blender, Cycles, and EEVEE, and the supported operating systems are Linux, Windows, and macOS.

Flamenco's architecture and Blender workflow are its defining strengths. Workers perform assigned tasks, and tags can route jobs to machines suited to the work. GPU rendering is available through Blender configuration, including Cycles/OptiX job types, but it depends on the Blender and Worker setup. Custom JavaScript job types offer a way to adapt job workflows. An OpenAPI interface supports communication among the Manager, Workers, web UI, and add-on. This makes Flamenco a fit for Blender-centered teams that want control over job dispatch and worker allocation, rather than a general render-management layer across multiple DCC applications.

Storage options include NAS or shared network storage workflows and the Shaman Storage System. Because Flamenco is self-hosted, the team operating it is responsible for its infrastructure and configuration; it is not a vendor-operated cloud render service. Documentation and community are its support channels. Choose Flamenco if Blender is central to your rendering and you want a free framework to run on your own machines. Consider another option if you need a cloud-operated service or broad multi-DCC support.
