Our verdict on Autodesk Backburner

Autodesk Backburner coordinates background and distributed processing across computers on the same network. It is aimed at teams rendering animation or handling other batch jobs with Autodesk applications, including Maya, 3ds Max, Flame, Flare, Flame Assist, and Lustre. A manager coordinates jobs and render nodes, while Backburner Monitor provides queue and task controls. Teams looking for a free render manager within an Autodesk-oriented, on-premises workflow are the clearest fit; teams seeking broader software coverage or cloud rendering should look elsewhere.

Backburner’s core is job distribution and control rather than a broad rendering toolset. Users can queue jobs, split animation work into tasks for render nodes, create node groups, and monitor, pause, restart, or reassign work. Maya jobs can be submitted through Render > Create Backburner Job. Custom batch, executable, or script jobs can also be submitted through cmdjob. This makes the product relevant for farms that need centralized handling of application renders and other background jobs, while its narrower Autodesk focus is a constraint for mixed-software pipelines.

The published plan is Free, priced at $0, with a download through the Autodesk App Store. Backburner is self-hosted and on-premises, so teams are responsible for their networked computers and render nodes. One important caveat is support status: Autodesk describes Backburner as no longer officially supported for Maya and offered as-is. Platform requirements may also vary by product and version; Autodesk materials describe Windows, macOS, and CentOS/Linux support in differing contexts. Choose it when free network job management for supported Autodesk applications is the priority and an as-is tool is acceptable. It is a weaker choice for buyers who need official Maya support or wider application coverage.
