Our verdict on Fission

Fission is an Apache 2.0-licensed Rust framework for building desktop, mobile and web applications. Developers author interfaces with its widget system and define application behavior through typed state, actions and reducers. Its shared application model is aimed at teams that want to carry a common UI and state approach across macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and web, rather than maintain separate framework-specific models for each target. Rust teams evaluating a cross-platform app foundation are the clearest fit.

The framework’s breadth is a notable part of its design: a first-party CLI supports project setup, running, testing and target generation, while the framework includes diagnostics workflows and platform capabilities such as notifications, camera access and deep links. Accessibility support covers semantics, keyboard navigation and focus handling. Desktop release workflows include packaging formats such as .app, .pkg, .exe, .msi, .msix and .run. Fission is available as Rust crates, and its pricing model is free with an open-source license.

The main tradeoff is maturity: Fission is currently versioned before 1.0, so teams that require an established framework should weigh that status before committing. Its custom UI stack and Rust-first approach also make it a focused choice rather than a general-purpose desktop framework for teams centered on other languages or UI systems. Support is listed through documentation, and deployment is self-hosted. Pick Fission when a Rust team values one shared model across desktop and mobile, with web also in scope; consider alternatives if project requirements prioritize a post-1.0 framework or support channels beyond documentation.
