Our verdict on FirmWire

FirmWire is an open-source full-system emulation platform for analyzing smartphone baseband firmware. It is aimed at firmware researchers and vulnerability analysts who need dynamic analysis, fuzzing, debugging, root-cause analysis, interactive exploration, and runtime task injection without relying solely on physical hardware. The project supports selected MediaTek and Samsung Shannon firmware images, with automatic firmware recognition, unpacking, and loader selection to help prepare supported images for analysis.

Its strongest workflow combines emulation with AFL++-based fuzzing, persistent mode, and crash replay. Researchers can inspect execution through GDB breakpoints and memory inspection, control emulated execution interactively through IPython or Jupyter, and inject compiled C modules and tasks at runtime. Execution snapshots and restoration support repeatable investigation, while pattern-based symbol and memory-table resolution addresses firmware-analysis needs. These capabilities give FirmWire a focused dynamic-analysis profile rather than a general-purpose reverse-engineering scope.

The surrounding ecosystem is a significant part of the product's fit. Integrations include Docker, Ghidra, GDB, IPython/Jupyter, AFL++, QEMU, PANDA, and avatar2, supporting workflows that connect emulation, debugging, fuzzing, and analysis. FirmWire is free and open source, but its practical audience is defined by its technical boundaries: Linux support, ARM and MIPS little-endian architectures, and a documented subset of MediaTek and Samsung Shannon images. Choose it for supported baseband research and fuzzing workflows; choose an alternative when broader firmware coverage, other architectures, or non-Linux support is required.
