Our verdict on Firezone
Firezone is an open-source zero-trust network access platform for organizations connecting users to private applications, databases, subnets, SaaS applications, and devices. It combines WireGuard-encrypted tunnels, identity-provider authentication, resource-level access policies, native clients, and gateways deployed on customer infrastructure. Small teams can use it for controlled remote access across Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, and Android, while larger organizations can manage access through groups, sites, resources, and an API.
Its freemium pricing makes the entry point clear. The Starter plan costs $0 per month and supports up to 6 users, with secure remote access, OIDC authentication, audit logs, and a REST API. Team costs $5 per user per month with monthly billing or $4.16 per user per month with annual billing, adding zero-trust network access for up to 500 users, full-tunnel routing, conditional access policies, and priority email support. A 30-day trial is also available. Enterprise adds unlimited users, directory synchronization for Google Workspace, Entra ID, and Okta, log sinks, dedicated Slack support, uptime SLAs, and SOC 2 and penetration-test reports.
The standout capability is its identity-centered access model: administrators can define resource-level policies and choose full-tunnel or split-tunnel routing, with audit logs covering changes, sessions, API requests, and network flows. Integrations include Google Workspace, Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, Terraform, Amazon S3, and several logging and SIEM platforms. Firezone suits teams that want affordable ZTNA with self-hosted gateway options and detailed access visibility. It is a weaker fit for organizations requiring device-posture checks covering operating-system versions, disk encryption, malware protection, or MDM compliance.
