Our verdict on FilePizza
FilePizza is an open-source, browser-based file transfer service for sending files directly between an uploader’s and recipient’s browsers. It is aimed at people who need temporary sharing without placing file data on an intermediary server, as well as teams that prefer to self-host the service. Transfers use WebRTC and begin through temporary share URLs, keeping the workflow focused on direct delivery rather than persistent file storage or account-based collaboration.
Its strongest feature set centers on the transfer itself. FilePizza supports multiple-file uploads delivered as a ZIP archive, optional password protection, uploader-side progress monitoring, and cancellation. Recipients can also use streaming downloads through a Service Worker. These features make it suitable for sending a group of files through a short-lived link while retaining visibility into the active transfer. DTLS-encrypted WebRTC communications add an encryption layer to the browser-to-browser connection.
Deployment flexibility is another important distinction. FilePizza runs on the web and can be self-hosted through Docker, giving technically capable users a path to operate the project under their own deployment. The main operational constraint is that the uploader’s browser must remain open while the transfer is in progress, so it is less suitable for unattended delivery or workflows that depend on a persistent file-hosting endpoint. Choose FilePizza for direct, temporary transfers and self-hosted control; choose an alternative if you need a desktop client or transfers that continue after the sender closes the browser.
