Our verdict on Fiano

Fiano is an open-source Go toolkit for inspecting and modifying UEFI firmware and ROM images. Its UTK command-line utility targets firmware engineers and developers who need to examine image contents and make structural changes. It can summarize images in table or JSON formats, find firmware files with regular-expression matching, dump EFI files to FFS files, and extract images into directories for reassembly. The scope is deliberately firmware-specific, so teams looking for a general-purpose reverse-engineering suite may need another tool alongside it or instead.

The manipulation workflow is a notable strength: Fiano can insert EFI files at several positions in firmware volumes, remove firmware files, and replace PE32 payloads. DXE Cleaner is included for removing unnecessary DXE modules. The separate FMAP utilities parse, checksum, extract, summarize, and verify flash maps, extending the toolkit beyond basic image browsing. These capabilities make it a fit for teams working directly with UEFI images and flash maps; they are less relevant to analysis centered on other binary formats or decompilation.

Fiano is distributed as a self-hosted open-source project, rather than as a published paid-plan offering. That makes it suitable for organizations that can work with command-line tools and manage their own environment, across small, mid-market, and enterprise teams. Its concentrated feature set is a reason to choose it for UEFI image editing and analysis, but also a boundary: teams needing a broader reverse-engineering environment, a plugin API, or a hosted service should consider alternatives. Choose Fiano when UEFI-specific inspection and modification are the core task; look elsewhere when those needs are secondary to a wider analysis workflow.
