Our verdict on Fable

Fable is an open-source, self-hosted compiler that translates F# into JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Rust, Dart, PHP, and Erlang/BEAM. It is aimed at developers and teams who want to write in F# while targeting web, server, or other runtime ecosystems. Its single source language and multiple output targets make it relevant to F# teams working across more than one language environment, rather than developers looking for a general-purpose transpiler.

The breadth of its targets is a defining strength. Fable supports JavaScript interoperability through imports and emitted JavaScript, produces ES2015-compatible JavaScript, and supports F# Core plus selected .NET libraries. Source maps and configurable output directories are available, while Erlang output includes generated rebar3 project scaffolding. The documentation lists seven targets; the CLI documentation lists six language options and omits Beam, so teams evaluating Erlang/BEAM output should check the relevant workflow before adopting it.

Fable provides command-line release, watch, and clean modes, with a selectable compilation language. Its ecosystem includes Webpack, Vite, Parcel, Node.js, npm, and NuGet, which helps connect compilation to JavaScript tooling and package workflows. The project is open source and self-hosted, with documentation and community support channels. Choose Fable if your work is centered on F# and you want to target several languages or integrate F# with JavaScript tooling. It is a less suitable fit if you need multiple source languages or a managed hosted compiler.
