Our verdict on Fabio

Fabio is an open-source HTTP and TCP reverse proxy and load balancer for teams running self-hosted service-oriented or microservice environments. It builds routing tables from Consul service registrations and health checks, then updates them without requiring a restart. The product supports HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, WebSocket, and gRPC traffic, making it suitable for deployments that need more than HTTP-only routing.

Its strongest fit is the Consul ecosystem. Fabio integrates with Consul for discovery and routing, Vault, Docker, Amazon ELB, Amazon API Gateway, and several monitoring platforms, including Prometheus, Graphite, StatsD, DataDog, and Circonus. TLS termination includes dynamic certificate stores, while raw TCP and TCP-SNI proxying extend coverage to non-HTTP workloads. Traffic shaping supports weighted deployments, and the web UI provides routing-table inspection and manual overrides. Docker image and Docker Compose support also give teams a defined path for container-based deployment.

Fabio uses an open-source, self-hosted model, so the operating team remains responsible for deployment and ongoing administration. Its feature set is focused on service discovery, proxying, routing changes, and observability rather than AI-assisted administration. Teams already using Consul should find the product’s architecture aligned with their environment; teams without Consul may prefer a reverse proxy designed around another discovery system or a broader managed platform.
