Our verdict on Ethyca Fides

Ethyca Fides is an open-source privacy engineering platform for developers, privacy teams, and organizations building privacy controls into applications, data pipelines, and enterprise systems. Its core model uses a machine-readable taxonomy for data categories, uses, subjects, and policy logic. Fides supports data discovery and mapping, data subject request processing, retention and deletion workflows, de-identification, privacy policy enforcement, and administrator-facing privacy interfaces. It can run on an organization’s own infrastructure and is also available as a hosted service from Ethyca, making it a fit for teams that want privacy operations closely connected to engineering workflows.

Integration breadth is a key strength. Fides provides APIs, CLI tooling, and integrations with Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, MongoDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, Salesforce, Shopify, Stripe, and Zendesk. The platform also includes privacy controls for AI training, inference, and model governance. That combination gives teams a way to connect privacy policies and request workflows across databases, SaaS systems, and application environments rather than treating privacy work as a separate administrative process.

The main trade-off is its technical orientation. Developers gain open-source access, self-hosted deployment, and extensibility, while teams looking for a primarily packaged compliance or assessment workflow may find the fit narrower. Fides is also a broader privacy infrastructure layer rather than a single-purpose data inventory tool: its scope spans taxonomy, policy enforcement, discovery, DSARs, retention, de-identification, and AI governance. Choose it when engineering ownership and control over deployment matter; consider an alternative when the priority is a ready-made regulatory assessment experience.
