Our verdict on Envoy Proxy

Envoy Proxy is open-source Layer 7 proxy software for modern service-oriented architectures. It can run as an edge proxy, service-mesh data plane, or sidecar alongside application servers. Self-managed deployments are supported on Windows, macOS, Linux, and other self-hosted environments. Its scope suits teams that need advanced traffic management, protocol support, observability, and control over their proxy infrastructure rather than a vendor-hosted SaaS service.

The feature set covers HTTP routing and forwarding, TLS termination and origination, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, gRPC, and WebSocket proxying, including TLS WebSockets. Envoy also includes advanced load balancing, retries, circuit breaking, health checking, outlier detection, global and local rate limiting, and HTTP response caching with in-memory and filesystem backends. Statistics, access logs, tracing, filters, and external processing extend its observability and customization options. The cache filter is described in the official documentation as work-in-progress in some versioned API documentation, so caching may deserve particular implementation review.

Configuration can be static or dynamically supplied through xDS configuration APIs, making Envoy suitable for environments that need centralized or changing proxy control. It is distributed as binaries and container images for self-managed deployments, which gives infrastructure teams deployment flexibility but also leaves setup, operations, upgrades, and reliability management with the adopting team. Choose Envoy Proxy for complex reverse-proxy or service-mesh workloads that justify this level of control. A simpler proxy may be a better fit for teams seeking minimal configuration or managed hosting.
