Our verdict on Envoy Gateway

Envoy Gateway is an open-source API gateway and reverse-proxy control plane for managing Envoy Proxy as a standalone or Kubernetes-based application gateway. It is aimed at platform teams and engineers operating APIs and network traffic in Kubernetes or standalone Envoy environments, especially teams adopting Kubernetes Gateway API standards. The self-hosted deployment model and open-source licensing suit organizations that want control over gateway operations rather than a managed service.

Its feature set covers the main traffic-management and security concerns expected from an API gateway. Kubernetes Gateway API-based routing supports HTTP, gRPC, TLS, TCP, and UDP traffic, while policies include TLS termination and passthrough, retries, request mirroring, traffic splitting, and load balancing. Authentication options span JWT, API key, Basic Auth, OIDC, mutual TLS, and external authorization. Global and local configurable rate limiting, plus URL, hostname, path, and header transformation, give platform teams room to express detailed gateway behavior. Envoy Proxy lifecycle and configuration management adds a control layer around the underlying proxy.

The main fit is narrow but clear: teams whose platform already centers on Kubernetes Gateway API and Envoy Proxy will find the integration model aligned with that architecture. The published integration set focuses on those two components, so organizations seeking a broad catalog of managed platforms or many prebuilt ecosystem connections should consider a different gateway approach. Envoy Gateway is a strong choice for technically capable teams comfortable with self-hosted infrastructure and policy-driven configuration; it is less suitable for buyers prioritizing a hosted service or a wider platform ecosystem.
