Our verdict on Elementary

Elementary is a data observability platform from Elementary Data for data and analytics engineers, with a strong fit for teams running dbt pipelines. It monitors production tables for freshness, volume, and schema changes, detects anomalies across nullness, distributions, dimensions, and completeness, and supports dbt, Elementary, and custom SQL tests. Dashboards and a catalog bring together health, test results, execution history, dependencies, ownership, and descriptions. Column-level lineage adds issue-impact context for tracing problems through downstream assets.

The published Cloud plans use contact-sales pricing and separate capabilities by scale. Scale includes up to 10 Editor seats, up to 1K tables, automated monitors, anomaly detection, column-level lineage, and performance monitoring. Enterprise raises the allowance to 20 Editor seats, 40 Viewer seats, and 3K tables, while adding SSO and RBAC plus advanced deployment options. Unlimited provides unlimited Editor and Viewer seats, up to 3K tables, a dedicated customer-success engineer, and tailored implementation and training. A 30-day free trial is available, while the self-hosted community edition is open source rather than an ongoing free plan.

Elementary’s ecosystem centers on dbt and common data-stack tools, with integrations including dbt Cloud, dbt Core, Airflow, BigQuery, Databricks, Fivetran, Athena, ClickHouse, Census, Atlan, Collibra, and others. Alerts can route to email, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Opsgenie, PagerDuty, Jira, Linear, or webhooks. Cloud and self-hosted deployment, chat and community support, and listed SOC 2, HIPAA, and SSO/SAML coverage suit organizations with varied operating requirements. Choose Elementary when dbt context, lineage, incident impact, and execution-cost visibility matter together; teams seeking a simple standalone monitor may find its broader observability scope unnecessary.
