Our verdict on DiskPilot

DiskPilot is a free, open-source desktop utility for analyzing and cleaning disk usage on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is aimed at users who want more than a basic folder-size view: the product recursively scans files and folders, accounts for hardlinks in its calculations, and helps identify large, duplicate, junk, cache, and forgotten files. Cleanup can send selected items to the system Trash or delete them permanently.

Its strongest area is disk-usage exploration. An interactive treemap provides drill-down navigation, while a sortable tree view exposes file and folder metrics in a more structured format. Together, these views support both visual discovery and detailed inspection. Duplicate file finding adds a second way to reclaim space, and hardlink deduplication is useful when a directory structure includes links that could otherwise distort usage calculations. The published feature set is focused on local analysis and cleanup rather than reporting workflows: CSV and JSON export are listed as roadmap items, and file-type filtering is also planned.

DiskPilot fits users who prefer open-source desktop software and want cleanup actions included in the same utility as scanning and visualization. Its cross-platform availability makes it suitable for mixed Windows, macOS, and Linux environments, while GitHub Releases distributes builds for all three systems. Choose it when treemaps, recursive scans, duplicate discovery, forgotten-file identification, and deletion are central requirements. Consider another tool if report export or file-type filtering is essential today, or if the workflow depends on a narrower reporting function rather than interactive inspection and cleanup.
