Our verdict on diskbloom
diskbloom is an open-source terminal disk-space analyzer for macOS and Linux. It is designed for users who want to inspect storage visually through a nested treemap rather than navigate directories without a size overview. The interface combines file-type color mapping, an extension legend, a dual-pane tree view, and size bars to show how storage is distributed across files and folders. It measures on-disk allocation and accounts for hardlinks during scanning.
Its main strength is the depth of its focused visualization. Users can scan the current directory or specify a path, then navigate the treemap with a mouse, rescan, preview files on macOS through Quick Look, or open files in their default application. The tool also supports trash deletion and confirmation before permanent deletion. Distribution as a single static binary, through Homebrew, or through Go gives macOS and Linux users several installation paths, while the Apache-2.0 license fits open-source workflows.
The trade-off is a narrow scope. diskbloom analyzes files and folders, but it does not provide an application-size view or export reports. Its workflow is centered on an individual directory or specified path rather than a broader reporting system. Choose diskbloom if a terminal-based treemap, file-type breakdown, and direct cleanup actions match your needs. Choose another analyzer if exported reports, application-level storage views, or capabilities beyond its file-and-folder scan scope are central to your decision.
