Our verdict on Defguard

Defguard is a self-hosted business VPN and zero-trust access platform built around WireGuard. It is aimed at organizations that want to manage VPN locations, identities, devices, and access policies on their own infrastructure or cloud environment. Administrators work from a web interface, while clients support Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. The product also covers Linux servers, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OPNsense, making it suitable for open-source teams with mixed environments and a preference for deployment control.

The plan structure starts with Open Source, which includes built-in SSO with MFA, multiple VPN locations, VPN MFA, remote enrollment, and activity and audit logs. Business adds external SSO, firewall ACLs, LDAP and Active Directory synchronization, client configuration synchronization, a REST API, and SIEM log streaming. Enterprise extends the platform with active-active high availability, service VPN locations, an offline license, custom support, and device policy postures. That progression makes the product practical for teams that want to begin with core identity-aware VPN access and expand into directory integration, centralized administration, and higher availability.

Defguard’s strongest distinction is the breadth of controls around WireGuard access. Connection-level MFA, built-in OpenID Connect, external identity integrations, user-, group-, and device-based ACLs, posture checks, provisioning, webhooks, and audit exports support a hybrid access model rather than a basic tunnel-only deployment. Google Workspace, Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, JumpCloud, LDAP, Active Directory, Vector, and Logstash are supported integration points. Choose Defguard if self-hosting, open-source deployment, and policy depth matter more than a fully managed service. Teams seeking minimal infrastructure ownership or built-in AI features should consider a narrower alternative.
