Our verdict on Debezium

Debezium is an open-source distributed change data capture platform for teams that need database changes delivered as event streams. It captures row-level and document-level inserts, updates, and deletes from databases including MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, SQL Server, Oracle, Db2, Cassandra, CockroachDB, Spanner, Vitess, Informix, Ingres, Milvus, and YashanDB. Applications can use those events to update indexes, caches, derived views, downstream systems, or other data stores. Its best fit is an infrastructure team that wants control over an open-source CDC layer rather than a vendor-hosted service.

Debezium fits several event-streaming architectures. Connectors commonly run through Apache Kafka Connect, while Debezium Server can send events without Apache Kafka. The embedded engine allows applications to consume source changes directly. Integration options include Apache Kafka, Amazon Kinesis, Google Cloud Pub/Sub, Azure Event Hubs, Apache Pulsar, Redis, NATS, RabbitMQ, JDBC, Apache Iceberg, and Databricks. Initial and incremental snapshots help establish or refresh downstream state, while schema change event capture and schema history preserve structural context. Single-message transformations and content-based routing add control over how events are shaped and delivered.

The breadth of supported databases and sinks makes Debezium useful for heterogeneous data estates, but its focus remains change capture and event delivery rather than a complete managed replication service. Deployment is self-hosted, with options for Windows, Linux, API-based use, Apache Kafka Connect, Debezium Server, and embedded operation. The architecture is one-way, so teams seeking bidirectional synchronization should consider a different approach. Debezium is a strong choice for organizations with the operational capacity to run CDC infrastructure and tailor its integrations; it is less suitable for buyers seeking a hosted, turnkey replication product or AI-assisted capabilities.
