Our verdict on ddup
ddup is open-source, self-hosted software for checking the health of internal or external application endpoints and updating DNS records automatically. It is aimed at teams that want to manage DNS failover themselves across Linux environments, rather than adopting a managed DNS failover service. The project supports round-robin DNS, allowing healthy deployments to remain in rotation while unhealthy replicas are excluded. It handles both IPv4 A and IPv6 AAAA records.
Deployment is flexible for infrastructure teams: ddup can run as a Docker or Podman container, or as a standalone binary managed by a system service. An optional local web server provides configuration access. Operators can configure the check interval, timeout, number of attempts, and DNS TTL, giving them control over how health checks and record changes behave. Its monitoring model is focused on periodic HTTP checks for configured endpoints, so it fits services whose availability can be evaluated through those checks.
The provider fit is clear but focused. ddup supports Azure DNS, Cloudflare DNS, and OVH, with automatic updates applied to DNS records based on endpoint health. Choose it if you need open-source, self-hosted DNS failover with configurable thresholds, round-robin behavior, and deployment flexibility. Choose an alternative if your environment depends on DNS providers outside those three, requires failover methods beyond DNS records, or calls for a broader managed monitoring platform.
