Our verdict on Datadog Observability Pipelines
Datadog Observability Pipelines processes and routes logs, metrics, and traces before they reach destinations such as Datadog, SIEM platforms, data lakes, and cloud storage. It is aimed at security and DevOps teams that need control over telemetry movement, including filtering, sampling, transformation, enrichment, sensitive-data redaction, and dual shipping. The product combines a centralized cloud control plane for building and monitoring pipelines with a Worker that runs in the customer's infrastructure.
Pricing is usage-based. The Ingested GB plan costs $0.095 USD per ingested GB per month with annual billing and covers uncompressed data ingested. Ingested GB On-Demand costs $0.12 USD per ingested GB per month with monthly billing. The vCPU plan is recommended for volumes above 30 TB per month and uses predictable pricing based on allocated Worker capacity; the pricing page says vCPU pricing is available by contacting Datadog. A 14-day free trial is available, while the product does not have a free plan. Buyers should compare expected telemetry volume and billing preference before selecting a tier.
The integration set covers Datadog, Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Storage, Splunk, ClickHouse, Snowflake, Databricks, Microsoft Sentinel, Google Security Operations, and OpenTelemetry. Platform support includes web, Linux, API, and self-hosted deployment. Pipeline simulation and live health monitoring support operational oversight, while metric-tag governance, trace sampling, Terraform export, and rule-based redaction address control and repeatability. Datadog users needing centralized telemetry governance and multi-destination routing should consider it; teams seeking a free product or a fully vendor-managed Worker deployment should choose an alternative.
