Our verdict on DArcMail
DArcMail is a desktop email preservation application from the Smithsonian Institution Archives for libraries, archives, cultural heritage organizations, and researchers working with existing MBOX collections. It processes those collections into EAXS XML preservation files and supports searching and filtering messages. The application runs locally on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with both graphical and command-line workflows. Its scope is preservation and limited access, rather than capturing a business mailbox as messages arrive.
The preservation workflow retains folder structure, headers, metadata, messages, and attachments. Processed collection data is stored in SQLite databases; DArcMail can also generate CSV logs and hashes for processed messages and attachments, and detect duplicates using MessageID. Search is available by keyword, date, and sender, with selected messages exportable in MBOX format. These functions make it a fit for organizing and examining a collection while maintaining records about processed content. Its focus is the contents of MBOX collections, not managing an organization's ongoing email lifecycle.
According to the vendor, the full implementation is no-cost and open source. It is desktop software that runs locally, rather than a hosted archiving service. Buyers seeking continuous email journaling, retention policies, or legal holds should choose a conventional business archiving product instead. DArcMail is better suited to teams processing existing collections for preservation and access, particularly where EAXS XML output and local workflows matter.
