Where it wins
- Supports multiple Pod interfaces with CNI delegation
- Includes IPv4 and IPv6 IPAM with route provisioning
- Manages networks through Kubernetes CRDs, VLANs and VXLANs
Where it doesn't
- Limited to Kubernetes deployments on Linux
- Requires self-hosted cluster operation
- Community-maintained after its 2026 stewardship change
Our verdict on DANM
DANM is an open-source Kubernetes networking suite for teams running self-hosted clusters on Linux, particularly where Pods need multiple network interfaces. It combines a CNI metaplugin, a built-in IPVLAN plugin, IP address management, network-management controllers, service discovery extensions, and a validating and mutating webhook. Its telecommunications background makes it a focused option for network-intensive Kubernetes environments rather than a general-purpose networking tool for varied platforms.
DANM’s pricing model is straightforward: it is free and open source, with no paid plan structure described. Its core value comes from the depth of its networking controls. The software supports built-in IPv4 and IPv6 IPAM, static and policy-based IP routes, multiple Pod interfaces, and delegation to SR-IOV, MACVLAN, Flannel, and Calico. Kubernetes CRD-based management gives teams an API-oriented way to define network configuration, while VLAN and VXLAN host-interface management extends control beyond basic Pod connectivity.
The main trade-off is scope. DANM is designed for Kubernetes on Linux and is operated through Kubernetes APIs in a self-hosted cluster, so it is not suited to teams seeking a managed, cross-platform networking service. Its feature set is also specialized around multi-interface and advanced network management, which may be more than a simpler cluster requires. The project moved from Nokia stewardship to community maintenance in 2026, a factor teams should consider when evaluating fit. Choose DANM when advanced Pod networking and CNI composition are priorities; choose a narrower networking option when basic cluster connectivity is enough.
