Our verdict on Cypress
Cypress is an open-source JavaScript and TypeScript testing framework for developers and QA teams building web applications. Its Cypress App runs end-to-end and component tests on Windows, macOS, Linux, and self-hosted infrastructure. Teams can author tests as code, use Cypress Studio for interaction recording and test generation, and run browser tests across Chromium browsers, Firefox, and WebKit. It also supports API testing with cy.request(), mobile web testing, visual testing integrations, and CI execution through Docker images or custom infrastructure.
Pricing separates local testing from hosted collaboration and CI visibility. The free plan provides the open-source Cypress App. According to the published plans, the Team plan costs $67 USD per month when billed annually, while Business costs $267 USD per month when billed annually. Cypress Cloud adds test recording, replay, screenshots, videos, logs, parallelization, load balancing, analytics, integrations, and AI-assisted capabilities; paid plans therefore suit teams that need centralized results and distributed CI execution. An Enterprise plan is also available. GitHub, GitLab, Jira, Slack, Microsoft Teams, CircleCI, Bitbucket, Jenkins, and Travis CI integrations support common development and delivery workflows.
Cypress fits JavaScript teams that want one tool covering browser, component, API, CI, and selected visual-testing workflows, with the option to run infrastructure themselves. Its main boundary is visual validation: Cypress captures screenshots but does not perform image comparison itself, so comparison requires plugins or integrations. Teams should also review their CI parallelization requirements because Cypress documents execution across available CI machines without stating a maximum for the Team plan. Choose Cypress for web-focused teams prioritizing code-based authoring and CI breadth; consider an alternative if built-in visual comparison or a stated low-tier parallel-run limit is essential.
