Our verdict on Crux
Crux is a managed backend platform for multiplayer games, aimed at indie and mid-size studios building dedicated-server and online multiplayer experiences. It brings authentication, persistent player data, leaderboards, matchmaking, server discovery, economies, inventory, and live configuration through one API. Teams can connect Unity, Roblox, Godot 4, JavaScript or TypeScript clients, and custom game servers. Its core fit is small teams that need backend infrastructure without assembling each service separately.
Pricing is accessible for early development. The free Dev plan includes authentication, persistent player data, server registry, live configuration, matchmaking, SDKs, unlimited projects, community support, and no credit card requirement. Launch costs $10 per month and adds every BaaS feature, 50 GB of player documents, email support, and one project. Scale costs $79 per month with 1 TB of player documents, priority email support, and one project. Custom provides tailored MAU, API, project, environment, storage, resource, and support terms. Crux Runtime is separate and currently a capacity-gated closed alpha with a limited evaluation allowance.
Live configuration is the clearest differentiator for teams managing changing game settings. Crux supports immutable bundles, environment-specific activation, active-setting retrieval, and rollback without releasing a new client build. That can help teams manage staging and rollout changes alongside server-authoritative currencies and inventory. However, Crux is deliberately narrower than a complete LiveOps suite: it does not provide audiences, experiments, or analytics, and its category specifications list player segmentation as false and experimentation as none. Choose Crux for low-cost multiplayer backend fundamentals and configuration control; choose an alternative if targeted messaging, audience segmentation, or experimentation is central to your operation.
