crosvm is an open-source virtual machine monitor written in Rust and developed by Google for ChromeOS and other products. It is designed for developers, platform integrators and operating-system projects that need Linux or Android guests on Linux, Android or Windows hosts. Its documented backends include KVM, Android-specific backends, WHPX and HAXM, giving it a focused role in system-level virtualization rather than general desktop VM management.

The strongest part of crosvm is its isolation model. Device functions run in separate processes, while namespaces, seccomp and Minijail add further controls around the virtual machine environment. Virtio support covers network, storage, graphics, audio and filesystem devices, creating a consistent paravirtualized device layer for supported guests. Snapshot restoration can help preserve VM state, and nested virtualization controls support workloads that need virtualization inside a guest. These capabilities make crosvm relevant to platform engineering and sandboxed development environments where process boundaries and hardware-assisted virtualization matter.

crosvm’s fit is narrower than a general-purpose desktop hypervisor. Its management interface is the command line, and the verified guest scope centers on Linux and Android. The host matrix includes Linux, Android and Windows, but the product’s stated purpose remains closely tied to ChromeOS, operating-system projects and platform integration. Choose crosvm when you need an open-source, CLI-controlled monitor with strong device isolation, virtio support, snapshots and nested virtualization. Choose an alternative when desktop-oriented workflows, broader guest coverage or live migration are central requirements.

crosvm pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Process-per-device sandboxing with namespaces, seccomp and Minijail
    • Virtio devices cover networking, storage, graphics, audio and filesystems
    • Snapshots, nested virtualization controls and CLI VM management
  • Where it doesn't
    • Management is command-line based
    • Guest operating systems are limited to Linux and Android
    • Does not support live migration
