Our verdict on Courier

Courier gives developers and product teams an API- and SDK-based way to send product alerts and lifecycle messages across email, SMS, push, in-app inbox, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. Its visual Journeys builder combines message workflows with provider routing, user preferences, delivery tracking, and retry and failover controls. That makes it a fit for teams coordinating notifications across channels; teams sending only occasional, straightforward messages may prefer a narrower service.

Journeys can branch, add delays, fetch data, throttle or batch sends, and create digests. Courier also supports connected delivery providers, including SendGrid, Mailgun, AWS SES, Twilio, Firebase Cloud Messaging, and Apple Push Notification Service. Automatic retries use backoff and account for provider rate limits, while backup providers can be configured per channel. A hosted preference center and in-app inbox components extend the workflow beyond sending. This depth is useful when delivery behavior and recipient choice need to be managed centrally, but may be more machinery than a basic notification setup calls for.

The Developer plan costs $0 per month and includes Journeys and broadcasts, an MCP server, CLI, SDKs, and email support. Business is priced at $0.005 per send, with AI translations, cross-device email testing, and email and chat support. Enterprise offers volume pricing, a dedicated Slack channel, role-based access control, an enterprise SLA, and EU data residency. The published plan details give no fixed monthly fee for Business, so teams should weigh usage-based sending against their expected volume. Courier is best suited to teams that value workflow control and channel resilience; those seeking a simpler, fixed-price sending tool may want another option.
