Our verdict on CounterMail

CounterMail is a privacy-focused email service for individuals, organizations, and businesses that need stronger email privacy controls. Its feature set centers on OpenPGP email encryption, stated true end-to-end security, anonymous email headers, encrypted mailbox storage, and infrastructure designed around diskless web servers. It also supports custom domains, dynamic aliases, secure forms, and Android use. Web access is available alongside support for Windows, macOS, Linux, and third-party clients through IMAP. New registrations are currently closed, which makes availability an important consideration for prospective buyers.

Pricing is paid-only, with no free plan and a 10-day trial. The published starting price is $3.29 per user per month, while the available prepaid plans are $29 per user for 6 months, $49 per user for 12 months, and $79 per user for 24 months. Each plan includes 4 GB of encrypted storage and premium features. The plan structure is straightforward, but the listed prices are multi-month prepaid amounts rather than standard monthly or annual billing periods. Buyers should therefore compare the upfront commitment with their expected usage before choosing a term.

CounterMail’s strongest fit is for security specialists who value OpenPGP, privacy-focused infrastructure, aliases, secure forms, and encrypted storage more than broad ecosystem convenience. IMAP access helps connect third-party mail clients, while custom-domain support extends the service beyond a basic personal mailbox. However, 4 GB of storage may be restrictive for large archives, and new users cannot currently register. Organizations seeking immediate onboarding, larger storage, or a wider collaboration environment should consider alternatives. CounterMail is better suited to users who prioritize hardened email features and can work within its availability and storage limits.
