Our verdict on Coterm
Coterm is a native macOS terminal and browser workspace for developers who work with AI coding agents and want collaborative pair programming around a shared session. It combines multiple workspaces, tabs, split panes, browser panes, terminal notifications, and unread state in one application. Two developers can join the same live room and work around one coding-agent session. Supported terminal-based agents include Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Aider, Amp, and Cursor Agent. An iOS companion is also available in beta.
The product’s strongest distinction is its self-hosted collaboration model. Coterm provides real-time collaboration rooms through an optional self-hosted backend, so collaboration infrastructure is managed by the users. Preview sharing extends the workspace beyond terminal output, while notifications and unread state help collaborators track activity. The application is free and open source, making it suited to teams and individuals that want inspectable software and control over collaboration infrastructure rather than a conventional hosted service.
Coterm also has a narrow platform focus. The primary application is macOS, with iOS available as a beta companion, so it is not a general cross-platform pair programming choice. Its automation API, native terminal workspace, and support for several coding-agent tools will appeal to macOS developers building terminal-centered workflows. However, teams that require screen sharing or verified audio collaboration should choose a product designed around those communication features. Coterm is a strong fit for open-source, self-hosted terminal collaboration, but a less suitable choice for broader platform coverage or traditional video-based pairing.
