  • Where it wins

    • YAML topology definitions model nodes, links, and lab settings
    • Supports major network operating systems, containers, and generic VMs
    • Automates lifecycle operations, inventories, CI validation, and telemetry workflows
  • Where it doesn't

    • Self-hosted deployment requires local infrastructure and operational ownership
    • Network operating system images may require separate access or licensing
    • Lab-oriented scope is less suited to general production automation

Our verdict on Containerlab

Containerlab is a self-hosted command-line tool for building, deploying, wiring, and managing container-based network labs. Network engineers, developers, educators, and infrastructure teams can define nodes, links, and lab settings in YAML, then run environments with container or virtual-machine network operating systems. Its scope covers multivendor feature testing, design validation, configuration workflows, and repeatable lab automation rather than broad production network operations.

Topology-as-code is the product’s central strength. YAML files describe lab structure, while virtual wiring supports management networks, point-to-point links, bridges, and link impairments. Lifecycle commands cover deployment, reconciliation, inspection, execution, graphing, and destruction. Startup configuration files can use local, embedded, remote, environment-variable, and template inputs. Containerlab also generates Ansible and Nornir inventories for post-deployment configuration, giving teams a practical path from lab creation to device configuration.

Its ecosystem fit is substantial for a lab-focused tool. Containerlab works with Docker and Podman, connects with Ansible and Nornir, provides an HTTP API server for remote control, and supports Kubernetes deployment through Clabernetes. CI and telemetry-validation workflows extend its use into automated checks, while VS Code is included among its integrations. The supported network operating system range includes Nokia, Cisco, Juniper, Arista, SONiC, Cumulus VX, VyOS, FRR, VPP, BSD variants, OpenWRT, Linux containers, and generic virtual machines. Choose Containerlab when open-source, self-hosted lab automation and multivendor coverage are priorities. Choose a broader production automation platform when the main requirement is operating live network infrastructure at scale.
