Our verdict on Conmux

Conmux is an open-source, Windows-native terminal multiplexer for developers working with PowerShell, WSL tools, and AI-agent command-line interfaces. It runs on Windows ConPTY and provides panes that can spawn, resize, kill, and respawn processes. Beyond terminal layout, Conmux supervises whole process trees, stores scrollback, captures configurable ANSI output, and exposes pane events. Its Rust crate and CLI are complemented by a Tauri-based desktop shell, making it suited to users who want native Windows process control rather than a cross-platform terminal workflow.

The strongest distinction is process supervision. Windows Job Objects let Conmux manage an entire process tree, while daemon-backed detach and reattach persistence keeps sessions available after the controlling interface disconnects. Sequenced pane output and exact exit-code events are useful for workflows that need observable command behavior, including scripted or agent-driven sessions. The named-pipe CLI and GUI control plane add separate ways to operate the multiplexer, and the audited input injection path includes pluggable hooks for controlled interaction.

Conmux is free and open source, with local persistence and support for Windows native tools, PowerShell, WSL, CLI workflows, and a Tauri desktop GUI. Its scope is deliberately narrow: it currently supports Windows only, does not synchronize sessions, and is described as being in early development. Choose it when native Windows supervision, process-tree handling, and durable local sessions matter more than broad platform coverage or synchronized sessions. Users who need a mature cross-platform multiplexer or shared session synchronization should choose an alternative.
