Our verdict on CodeQuery

CodeQuery is a free, open-source desktop tool for indexing and searching source code, aimed at developers who want code navigation across C, C++, Java, Python, Ruby, Go and JavaScript. It combines cscope- and ctags-derived databases with a SQLite-backed query database. Search includes symbol and code queries, case-insensitive partial matches with * and ? wildcards, exact matching, and file-path filtering. A syntax-highlighted UTF-8 viewer and visualizations of function call graphs and class inheritance extend it beyond a plain text search. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Its defining strength is the combination of search and structural navigation in one desktop application. Developers can inspect call relationships and inheritance, then export those visualizations to PNG or Graphviz DOT. Files can be opened in external editors or IDEs, which gives the tool a way to fit alongside an existing editing workflow without making the editor itself the center of the product. The language list is explicit and focused; teams working outside those languages should look for a tool with broader coverage.

CodeQuery is freeware and free open source software, so there are no paid tiers to weigh against the search and visualization features. Its desktop delivery makes it a fit for individuals and small or mid-market teams seeking local codebase search, but it is not positioned as a shared hosted service. Support channels include email, community and documentation. Choose it if a free desktop tool for the listed languages and code-relationship views fits your workflow; consider alternatives if you need a team-wide hosted search experience or a different language set.
