Our verdict on Codchi
Codchi manages project development environments as reproducible, declarative NixOS-based code machines. Developers define environments in version-controlled repositories, and Codchi builds them inside isolated WSL instances on Windows or LXD containers on Linux. That makes it a focused option for developers and teams that need consistent environments across those operating systems, especially when dependency locking, configuration as code, runtime management, and shell integration are priorities. Its open-source model also suits projects that want the environment definition to live alongside repository code.
The strongest part of Codchi is its environment lifecycle model. Nix handles installation, updates, and rollback, while versioned environments can correspond to project commits. This gives teams a structured way to reproduce or restore development contexts instead of treating local setup as a one-time manual task. Codchi also extends the isolated code machine into the host workflow: users can share the host filesystem, manage secrets, launch graphical applications, pass through sound, use terminal integration, and create start-menu shortcuts. Support for NixOS modules and flakes adds room for more advanced declarative configurations.
Codchi is a good fit when Windows or Linux isolation and reproducibility matter more than a broad, cross-platform desktop experience. Windows users get WSL-based code machines, while Linux users get LXD containers, with both paths centered on Nix. The main boundary is platform coverage: macOS support is currently not implemented. The Nix-oriented design also favors teams comfortable expressing environments as code and working with Nix concepts. Choose Codchi for versioned, rollback-capable project environments across Windows and Linux; choose another tool if macOS support or a less specialized environment workflow is essential.
