Our verdict on Cockpit Machines

Cockpit Machines adds virtual-machine management to Cockpit, a web-based interface for administering Linux servers. It is aimed at Linux administrators who want to create, run, and manage VMs from that interface while also checking host activity. Machines uses QEMU and Libvirt as its primary VM data source; it is an optional component rather than a standalone monitoring product. Cockpit is available for Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora CoreOS, CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, Arch Linux, openSUSE, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Micro, while Machines requires a suitable QEMU/Libvirt host.

For monitoring, Cockpit provides live performance metrics, searchable system logs, and systemd service inspection and interaction. Historical metrics are available when Performance Co-Pilot (PCP) logging is enabled; Cockpit metrics can also use internal collection. That makes the feature set useful for operational checks alongside VM administration, but it is narrower than a dedicated server-monitoring product. Administrators looking for broader monitoring capabilities should consider a purpose-built alternative.

Cockpit is free under GNU LGPL, and Cockpit Machines is open source, with no paid tiers to weigh. Deployment options include cloud and self-hosted environments, and the listed support channels are community and documentation. The choice is strongest when VM host management and basic server visibility belong in the same Cockpit workflow; it is less suited to teams whose main requirement is dedicated monitoring. Historical visibility also depends on enabling PCP logging, so administrators should account for that configuration when they need past metrics.
