Our verdict on Clusternet

Clusternet is an open-source Kubernetes add-on for teams managing multiple clusters across public cloud, private cloud, hybrid, on-premises, and edge environments. It uses a parent management cluster with agents in child clusters, giving operators centralized access, application deployment, cross-cluster scheduling, and Kubernetes-styled APIs. Its kubectl-compatible plugin and client-go wrapper fit teams that prefer Kubernetes-native workflows and command-line operations.

Its strongest functional area is cross-cluster application placement. Clusternet supports replication, weighted, and capacity-based scheduling strategies, along with cross-cluster overrides, rollback, and canary rollout. Applications can be deployed through Helm charts, Kubernetes resources, and CRDs. Configurable network tunnels address VPC, edge, and firewall-separated clusters, while RBAC provides access control for managed clusters. Integrations with Helm, Cluster API, Submariner, and client-go extend its fit within Kubernetes environments. Automatic discovery and registration of Cluster API-provisioned clusters can reduce manual registration work where Cluster API is already in use.

Clusternet follows an open-source model rather than a tiered commercial plan, but the operational responsibility remains with the customer. The control plane is customer-managed, and deployment requires Clusternet components in parent and child Kubernetes clusters. The published capabilities focus on managing existing clusters, with no cluster provisioning workflow described. Teams should choose Clusternet when they need open-source multi-cluster scheduling, deployment controls, networking tunnels, and Kubernetes-native access across varied environments. It is less suitable for organizations seeking a managed control plane or infrastructure provisioning as part of the platform.
