Our verdict on Cluster API

Cluster API is an open-source Kubernetes sub-project for platform operators who need repeatable management of Kubernetes-conformant clusters. It provides declarative APIs and tooling for provisioning, upgrading, scaling, and destroying clusters, using Kubernetes resources and custom resources. The project runs in a Kubernetes management cluster and manages workload clusters through provider implementations, making it a fit for teams standardizing cluster operations across cloud and on-premises environments.

Its strongest capability is the breadth of the cluster lifecycle model. Infrastructure and bootstrap providers handle cluster provisioning, while pluggable control-plane providers support control-plane management. Cluster API also orchestrates Kubernetes version upgrades, scales control planes and worker MachineDeployments, and offers ClusterClass templates for managed topologies. Provider contracts create a structured integration model across infrastructure, bootstrap, and control-plane functions. Listed integrations and environments include AWS, Azure, vSphere, Kubeadm, EKS, GKE, and AKS, supporting both cloud and on-premises use cases.

The trade-off is that Cluster API is a foundation rather than a hosted management service. Teams need to work with the management-cluster model and select or operate the provider implementations that match their infrastructure and bootstrap requirements. Its core scope is cluster lifecycle automation, so organizations primarily seeking policy enforcement should evaluate whether their broader platform includes that capability. Choose Cluster API when declarative APIs, repeatable provisioning, multi-cluster operations, and upgrade orchestration are priorities. An alternative is more appropriate when the main requirement is a turnkey hosted service or a policy-first management layer.
