Cloud-Radar review
A focused open-source toolkit for testing CloudFormation locally and across AWS Regions.

Cloud-Radar is an open-source Python module for testing AWS CloudFormation templates and stacks. It is designed for developers and infrastructure teams that need to validate template behavior before deployment, then exercise deployed resources across AWS Regions. Its unit-testing layer renders templates locally, allowing teams to inspect conditions, conditional resource creation, resource properties, and generated names without AWS credentials. The package is installed with pip and runs in a self-hosted environment.
Its strongest distinction is the combination of local template checks with functional testing. Cloud-Radar can control stack creation and deletion, wrap Taskcat for multi-Region deployment tests, and interact with deployed resources through familiar tools such as boto3. It also supports CloudFormation transforms, including AWS::LanguageExtensions, and integrates with cfn-flip. This gives teams a testing path that spans rendered template logic and deployed infrastructure rather than focusing only on static configuration checks. Teams already working with CloudFormation, Taskcat, and Python will find the scope closely aligned with that workflow.
The trade-off is focus. Cloud-Radar supports AWS CloudFormation and AWS cloud testing, with no broader infrastructure-as-code coverage described. Its self-hosted model also means teams manage installation and execution themselves, while the pre-alpha package classification points to an early-stage project. Cloud-Radar suits AWS teams that want open-source Python testing for CloudFormation conditions, generated resources, deployments, and cleanup. Teams seeking multi-cloud coverage, a managed service, or a broader compliance-testing platform should choose a different category fit.
Cloud-Radar pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Tests template logic, conditionals, resources, properties, and generated names locally
- Runs functional tests across AWS Regions through Taskcat
- Supports deployed-resource interaction and stack lifecycle management
- Where it doesn't
- Limited to AWS CloudFormation and AWS-based testing workflows
- Self-hosted setup places installation and operation responsibility on the team
- Pre-alpha package classification signals an early-stage project
