Our verdict on CloneWorks
CloneWorks is a free, open-source code clone detection tool for large-scale repository analysis and clone detection experiments. It runs locally on Linux and macOS, using token-based comparison across source files. The tool is aimed at researchers and engineering teams that need control over clone preparation, similarity settings, scan organization, and result output rather than a hosted, guided workflow.
Its main strength is configurability. CloneWorks can normalize, transform, and filter source code before comparison, then extract fragments at block, function, or file granularity. Detection uses a modified Jaccard similarity metric, with configurable similarity and clone-size thresholds. Sub-block filtering and partial-clone indexes support near-miss analysis, while input partitioning addresses memory-constrained large-scale scans. Pluggable code-fragment and term processors add another layer of control, and results can be formatted for machine processing or human inspection.
CloneWorks is distributed free of charge under the project’s custom license, with no paid tier structure described. Its local installation and self-hosted model fit teams that can manage configuration and processing on their own systems. The documented language coverage is focused rather than broad: Java, C, C++, C#, and Python are supported. Choose CloneWorks when configurable token-based analysis, repository-scale processing, and research-oriented control matter most. A hosted product or a wider language range may suit teams that want less local setup or broader input coverage.
