Our verdict on clangd
clangd is a free, open-source C++ language server from the LLVM Project. It adds code intelligence to editors that support the Language Server Protocol, typically through an editor plugin. Its features serve C++ developers who want completion, diagnostics, navigation, refactoring and formatting within an existing editor workflow, across Windows, macOS and Linux. It is not a standalone IDE, so the editor remains central to the experience, including the interface and available features.
The language services cover day-to-day code understanding and editing: context-aware completion, in-editor errors and warnings, code fixes, clang-tidy checks, definition and reference lookup, symbol search, hover information, rename refactoring and formatting through embedded clang-format. For project context, clangd reads compile_commands.json or compile_flags.txt. Build configurations can come from CMake, Bazel, Make, Autotools or custom systems that generate compilation database entries. It is based on Clang; GCC-compatible compilers can be queried for their default configuration, and documentation describes Bear support for GCC, Clang, MSVC, and cross, embedded and HPC compilers.
The main trade-off is scope: clangd supplies language services rather than a complete C++ development environment. Buyers seeking an integrated debugger or a standalone IDE workflow should look elsewhere; those needs are not part of the listed feature set. Its editor-based model also means the chosen editor and plugin shape the interface and feature availability. With community and documentation support, it suits individuals through enterprise teams that already have an LSP-compatible editor and can provide project compilation settings. It is less suited to developers who want one integrated application to manage the whole coding workflow.
