Our verdict on Citadel

Citadel is a free, open-source mail and groupware system for organizations and individuals that want to operate their own communications infrastructure. It combines SMTP and ESMTP service with POP3 and IMAP access, browser-based WebCit webmail, multi-domain support, calendars, contacts, mailing lists, forums, and filtering. Linux users can deploy it with Docker, an installer, or source code, making it suited to administrators who want mail and collaboration features in one self-hosted system.

Its strongest practical advantage is breadth without a paid tier structure. Citadel is distributed under the GNU General Public License version 3 and includes core mail protocols, webmail, TLS/SSL encryption, antispam options through SpamAssassin and RBL/DNSBL services, plus integrations such as LDAP, GroupDAV, and Webcal. Docker deployment can fit teams that already manage containerized services, while multi-domain support gives administrators room to serve more than one domain from the same system. The trade-off is that the product remains an infrastructure responsibility: deployment, maintenance, filtering configuration, and mail operations sit with the organization running it.

Citadel also reaches beyond a narrow inbox-and-server role through calendars, contacts, forums, mailing lists, and mobile sync. Its high-availability posture has an important operational boundary: a standby server can be maintained and brought online manually, but automatic failover is not provided. Choose Citadel if free licensing, self-hosting, built-in WebCit, and a broad groupware feature set matter more than managed operations. Organizations seeking hosted administration or automatic failover should consider an alternative designed around those priorities.
