  • Where it wins

    • Discovers step definitions at runtime across local and remote processes
    • Combines Gherkin, SQL, process control, Selenium, and WebSockets
    • Supports Java/JVM and JavaScript clients with JUnit and Docker integration
  • Where it doesn't

    • Local execution may not suit teams needing a different execution model
    • Browser testing depends on Selenium and its surrounding setup
    • Client libraries focus on Java/JVM and JavaScript applications

Our verdict on Chorus BDD

Chorus BDD is an open-source behavior-driven development test interpreter for distributed systems. Teams define scenarios in Gherkin using Given/When/Then syntax, then execute them through the Chorus interpreter. It is aimed at teams testing applications whose behavior spans processes, databases, browsers, and remote components. Chorus runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and provides API access. Its process- and database-oriented design makes it a fit for engineering groups that need more than isolated browser assertions or unit-level checks.

The standout capability is runtime discovery of step definitions from other processes. Chorus can start and stop local processes, handle their output, and interact with them, while Java/JVM and JavaScript client libraries publish steps from application components. Its built-in handlers extend that model to SQL connections and statement or script execution, WebSockets, remoting, and Selenium actions such as opening browsers, navigating, refreshing, asserting URLs, and executing scripts. The surrounding ecosystem includes JUnit, Maven, Gradle, Docker, Selenium Grid, SQL databases, Java/JVM, and JavaScript. Docker execution and JUnit integration also give teams established ways to incorporate scenarios into existing workflows.

Chorus is most compelling when BDD scenarios need to coordinate distributed services, browser behavior, processes, and database state in one interpreter. The trade-off is focus: teams seeking a simple browser-only BDD tool may find its process discovery, remote publication, and database handlers broader than necessary. Browser coverage depends on Selenium, and the client libraries center on Java/JVM and JavaScript applications. Its local execution model may also be a constraint for teams whose primary requirement is a different execution approach. Choose Chorus for process-aware, database-centric Gherkin testing; consider an alternative when the priority is a narrower browser workflow or broader client-language coverage.
