Our verdict on Chiko
Chiko is an open-source terminal user interface for developers who need to inspect and send requests to gRPC APIs. It connects to gRPC servers, discovers services through server reflection, and generates request payload templates. Bearer-token authorization, custom headers, and request metadata cover common request configuration needs, while bookmarks and request history help developers return to earlier workflows.
Its strongest fit is a reflection-driven workflow that stays close to the terminal. Developers can browse discovered services, save requests as bookmarks, replay them, and import or export grpcurl commands. Log dumping to a file adds a practical way to retain request-related output. Chiko is distributed as a Go application through Homebrew, Go installation, source builds, and pre-built release binaries, giving technically oriented teams several installation paths.
Chiko is narrower than a complete gRPC testing suite. The listed feature set does not include testing, mocking, or CI capabilities, so teams building automated validation workflows may need another tool. Its desktop deployment model and terminal interface also suit developer-led request exploration more than broad platform collaboration. Choose Chiko when server reflection, generated payloads, authorization, metadata, bookmarks, and grpcurl interoperability match the workflow. Choose an alternative when automated tests, mocks, or CI integration are central requirements.
